Canna

Here is a plant that has been around for a thousand years and one whose popularity is coming back. There are a few of us who have been somewhat Canna-Snobs (me included), thinking the lot perhaps a little too common, with some Canna patches looking like ratty overgrown windburned weeds. But things in the Canna world are changing, and there are several new stunning varieties that no one could turn their nose up at: plants with beautiful variegated foliage, bold with reds, yellows, and greens. The flowers range from blood red to lemon yellow with every possible orange in between. If you want to keep your Canna beautiful all year, feed them well and keep them in the sun. Keep them in the ground for Zones 7-10, or lift the rhizome and store it otherwise.

Canna 'Aida' - Extra large, baby pink blooms on compact plants with dark green foliage make this a collector's item. Blooms from early summer until frost. From the Grand Opera series. A very erect, sturdy well presented Canna. (#CAA01, $6.95)

Canna 'Angel Pink' - Translucent apricot and peach with a pale yellow throat. An exceptional self-cleaning bloomer. (#CAA02, $6.95)

Canna ‘Black Knight’ - One of our favorites. This is a true beauty. There is no pink in this flower; its petals are a velvety deep red, like blood. The foliage is a deep burgundy with faint green veins. A gorgeous Canna, ideal for massing in sunny beds. (#CAB01, $7.95)

Canna 'Cleopatra' - This is a confused Canna. A truly spectacular Canna bearing bright yellow flowers with red speckles, but often producing blooms that are yellow with a red streak and occasionally throwing an all red bloom. The green foliage is marked with bronze-red streaks, or if she feels like it, the foliage may be all bronze. (#CAC01, $6.95)

SOLD OUT

Canna 'China Lady' - A Chinese coral pink that blooms much better than older varieties and is more compact. Blooms are very tight to the top of the leaves. (#CAC02, $6.95)

Canna 'Dawn Pink' - An impressive dwarf with beautiful oval bronze leaves. The plant is very compact, not getting above 3’. The flowers are an electric coral pink and contrast perfectly with the foliage. (#CAD01, $7.95)
Canna ‘Durban’ ( aka Red Flowered Variegated Canna) - This one is another show-off with highly attractive variegated leaves. Yellow leaf veins stand out against a red and purple leaf blade. Unlike many Cannas, C. Durban is slow to divide, a characteristic that some with limited space love. (#CAD02, $19.95)
Canna 'Imperialis’ (aka ‘Bengal Tiger’)- If you're looking for something to give your garden a tropical appearance, this is it! The lush foliage is dark green, heavily striped with narrow golden lines from the midrib to the edges of the leaves. We are talking about Canna leaves here - big leaves with bold stripes. Flowers are solid, bright orange. We don’t know what is better, the leaves or the flowers. This one was imported from India in 1963. (#CAI01, $9.95)

SOLD OUT

Canna 'Jester' - This one is a little slow, quite rare and a true dwarf. How small is a true dwarf? C. Jester never tops 2’. Rich, bright red flowers are fringed with yellow and are a conversation piece in any garden. Flowers are similar to the variety 'Lucifer,' but plants are more dwarf and compact. The foliage is pure green (#CAJ01, $9.95)

Canna 'Journey's End' - (aka Jimmy Carter) - A true dwarf with mature flowering plants under three feet tall bearing beautiful yellow flowers speckled with varying shades of pink. This Canna flower is very elegant looking. It’s not a big mass of wadded color, but rather a graceful spray of smaller flowers. When people see it in the garden, they often stop and remark on the beauty of its flowers. An excellent plant to give your garden a tropical look. (#CAJ02, $6.95)
Canna 'Lenape' - (#CAL01, $9.95)
Canna 'Madame Butterfly' - (#CAM02, $9.95)
Canna 'Maudie Malcolm' - (#CAM03, $9.95)
Canna 'Miss Oklahoma' - An extremely large bloom of deep watermelon pink forms on every stalk of this wonderful dwarf Canna. The leaves are a deep, dark green. This is by far the showiest of the pink Cannas. (#CAM01, $7.95)

Canna 'Nirvana’ (aka ‘Striped Beauty’, ‘Minerva’)- This is another Canna that would be a great plant even if it never bloomed. If you plant it in your garden, the foliage will be a welcome addition. Yet, the beautiful yellow flowers, each of which has a pure white stripe running up the center of each petal, will also justify its planting. (#CAN01, $9.95)

Canna 'Orange Beauty' - This is not a dwarf by any measure. Mature plants may reach 60 plus inches. Large vibrant orange blooms sit on top of pure green foliage. An effective summer screen for privacy and a dramatic backdrop. (#CAO01, $7.95)

SOLD OUT

Canna ‘Phaison’ (Tropicana tm Canna) - This one was brought over from S. Africa by Jan Potgeither. Its leaves are bold and wild looking. You have stripes of yellow and red on a big wide purplish blade. It is a great looking plant that grows up to 7’ tall and has the purest orange blooms. Even when Canna-snobs here at the nursery see it, they love it. (#CAP02, $15.95)

Canna 'Pink Beauty' - Hot pink petals are accented with a fine golden edge. Plants are compact with shiny green foliage. (#CAP01, $6.95)

SOLD OUT

Canna ‘Pink Sunburst’ (Pink Variegated Canna) - How could you make cannas better? Maybe spice up the leaves a little, get out some purple and gold paint, and go to town. Mother Nature had the same idea and she took a plain old Canna leaf and turned it into a mixture of purple and pink with golden streaks. Being otherwise true to the Canna, it produces a gazillion of pink flowers on dwarf stock, topping out at 48". (#CAP03, $15.95)

Canna 'Red King Humbert' - This 6' to 7’ tall giant produces beautiful red blooms on striking bronze-red leaves. Plant it behind your shorter Cannas for a striking tropical look and within a week your children can climb the canes and go visit the giant that lives in the clouds. Not really, but they are huge and will amaze you. (#CAR01, $7.95)
Canna 'Richard Wallace' - A refreshing pure yellow Canna with amazing growth makes this a lovely addition to your garden. The leaves are apple green and the plant grows to 35". (CAR03, $7.95)
Canna 'Rosemund Cole' - Behind our greenhouse, we have bed after bed of Cannas growing in the full Texas Sun. As people walk through the garden, they stop and look at some varieties more than others. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many people stop to behold this variety. The petals are a mix of rich red-orange and the underside is gold. An early bloomer, not to tall. (#CAR01, $6.95)
Canna ‘Tropical Sunrise' - (#CAT01, $9.95)

Canna 'Wyoming' - Another remarkable Canna! This is the plant that the new Canna phaison sported off of. It has beautiful bronze red leaves and large brilliant orange blooms. The leaves are very dark. (#CAW01, $7.95)

Canna 'Yellow King Humbert' - Splashes of orange on buttery-yellow flowers which are produced abundantly on this medium-height Canna make for a lovely combination. 35" tall. (#CAY01, $7.95)
